The Cyclery

If you lost your heart and soul to the iron steeds from the first decades of the last century, you'll probably appreciate every little bit of help you can get to make your wrenching life a tiny bit easier. Here's The Cyclery.

Way back when motorcycles were little more than motorized bicycles, a CYCLERY usually was a shop or workshop. From our own sweat stained, cussword-lined experience we know what black holes of non-existent availability of long obsolete parts exist in the world of historic machines. Not to mention the prices that rare OEM parts can command. So we started a while ago to have a selection of hard-to-find tools and spares reproduced by master craftsmen using period methods.

Among them are not only exact reproductions but also a couple of period-respecting newly developed parts. In the 100 years between then and now a few points of improvement may have popped up. Originality has been respected where it counts, and improvements have been introduced where it seemed desirable.

The Cyclery is stoked by the idea of making life working on a historic motorcycle that little bit easier.

The Cyclery Bosch Type JS 130 Headlight
Back in the Golden Twenties of the past century damaged lights caused by stones or spills were common. Lighting and charging systems were far from being dependable as we are used to it today. Getting spares for a Harley-Davidson in Germany was complicated and lengthy which brought many owners to switch to local products, which were available at any motorcycle dealer around the corner. Some guys even ordered their new machines without lighting and charging system and had them equipped with teutonic alternatives right from the start. This is a faithful reproduction of the conical pre-war Bosch headlight which was used on various brands in the 1920’s. Comes complete with mounting rods and switch key.

The Cyclery Screwdrivers for Handlebar End Plugs
The Cyclery Screwdrivers for Handlebar End Plugs
This is the tool you always wished to have when it’s time to loosen those frozen handlebar end screws. We all know that even the largest screwdriver in the average toolbox simply doesn’t do the job, because the slots in the end plugs are way too big and you will inevitably ruin them in no time. The Cyclery offers you the right stuff: hand forged and finished from tool steel with a substantial ironwood handle. The blade tip is hollow ground and 3/16” thick so it bites into the screw slot for a tight, non-slip fit. The version with 1/2” wide tip is intended for handlebars with hard plastic grips installed. Rubber grips can use the larger 5/8” type screwdriver. The shank has a 1/2” square section, which allows for support with an open end wrench. Classy tools for classic bikes.

The Cyclery Ride Controls for OEM I-Beam Forks
The Cyclery Ride Controls for OEM I-Beam Forks
Back in the days, when most roads were a far cry from what we know today the Ride Control was standard equipment and an indispensable device for the rider to react to road conditions. By turning the hand wheel you can adjust the spring action and the bounce is taken out of the front wheel on rough roads for safe riding at high speeds. As a rule of thumb you decrease friction the better the road gets and the lower the speed is, at which you ride. This detailed reproduction comes complete, ready to bolt on. A must for any restauration.

The Cyclery Servi-Car Box Seat Pads
The Cyclery Servi-Car Box Seat Pads
In 1932, still in times of the Great Depression, Harley-Davidson began production of the Servi-Car. Production did not end until 1973. These motorized three-wheelers were also intended for the automotive service industry, because in the 1930s, workshop service included the delivery of repaired cars to the valued customers. If the Servi-Car was not tow-bar-equipped, this service required two people. One colleague drove the customer's car and the other one followed on the Servi-Car to bring both back to the workshop. The passenger usually sat on the sheet steel box instead of on a seat of his own. The Factory provided generously padded seat pads for the box to increase the passenger's comfort. We offer the pads in a version with magnetic mounting strips that does not require drilling holes into the box lid, and in a screw-on version. If your box hasn't the mounting holes anyway a drill job is required.

The sleeves are CNC-machined and stand out for their high quality and accuracy of fit. The double row sealed angular ball bearings used in the insert ensure durability and perfect function without the disadvantages of the original construction. In addition, the outer sleeve is equipped with three lubrication holes to allow grease refill via the Alemite nipples without disassembly. The saddle top is made of top quality genuine leather and sports the stamped Mesinger logo just like the the original pattern.

The Cyclery Mesinger No. 3 Solo Seats
Excellent reproduction of the famous Mesinger No.3 cushion suspension seat as used on Harleys and Indians from 1925 to 1933 and on the Henderson KJ from 1929-1931. This seat has the saddle top stretched only over a frame, thus the central area is, so to speak, self-supporting. The top's tension is adjusted by means of a set screw. This feature and the anatomically shaped central vent area make the Mesinger No. 3 one of the most comfortable of all solo seats. It also fits models after 1934 with a large saddle tee. The saddle cover is made of the finest leather and has the embossed Mesinger logo of the original template.

The saddle top is made of top quality genuine leather and sports the stamped Mesinger logo just like the the original pattern.

The Cyclery Intake Housing Ring Nuts
The Cyclery Intake Housing Ring Nuts
Quite a cool thing that The Cyclery has invented and presenting here. Instead of simply offering replacement ring nuts for the intake housings of IOE models, they have addressed the problem of loose intake housing nuts. Until now, the solution to this was to weld and/or rework the threads in the cylinders of the pocket-valve V2 engines. The ravages of time, unilateral pressure from the inlet tappets and pushrods, heat that weakens the structure, a lack of care when retightening the ring nuts - all these factors contribute to the fact that after about 100 years, the threads in the cylinders into which these nuts are screwed have widened and are no longer cylindrical, but often also conical. So it makes complete sense to offer oversize nuts as an uncomplicated solution for such maltreated threads. This way, reworking, welding and similar costly repairs can be avoided. The nuts are manufactured in different outer diameters and you order two or three sizes to check which one fits your cylinder best. Of course, we will take back the nuts you don't need, as long as you have treated them well and screwed them in with a suitable tool and not with a pipe wrench.

The Cyclery Starter Gear Bushing
The Cyclery Starter Gear Bushing
On kickstart-only bikes the starter mechanism should be inspected on a regular basis. The gears involved are prone to wear and if neglected will leave you stranded at the roadside sooner or later. Especially the starter gear bushing should be in good order because it will ruin your mainshaft quickly when it runs beyond tolerances and the gear starts to tumble. Since this bushing is critical and most products on the market do not meet the requirements by material and specs, the Wrecking Crew decided to have this part made in Germany. CNC machined from industrial red bronze to closest specs, with the correct oil groove and chamfer. This is the correct part - period. Press-in, ream to size, install and you are all set, with peace of mind.

The Cyclery Vintage Army Bike Bench
The Cyclery Vintage Army Bike Bench
Back in the pre-WWII days motorcycle work benches used to be made from wood, even in the HD factory, as old photgraphs show. Presumably, most of them were built in town by the carpenter around the corner, but if you were a motorcycle mechanic in the US Army and in the field, with no joiner around, you built it yourself, on the spot. To faciliate this, the army provided service manuals, which included a sketch after which you could build a workbench and after this exact sketch The Cyclery workbenches are precisely cut from glulam boards. All you need for assembly are a few common hand tools. With a very detailed instruction booklet and all screw holes pre-drilled it will be a straightforward job. Admittedly, this 100+ year old design does not perform like a modern table lift, but with a little help from a friend you can easily roll on or off your bike and the sturdy construction guarantees long-time service. Hard to imagine a more decorative piece in any traditional workshop or showroom.
