One of the brands in the W&W Cycles brand portfolio. Conceived in the spirit of Robert Owens Bates, who all but invented the motorcycle aftermarket. Being a service provider, he started Bates Motor Scooter Service in 1939, he caught on to the concept that customization of bikes with selected custom parts can be a healthy business idea. Up to this very day vintage Bates parts are prized possessions. Because they still have that twist that makes accessories truly remarkable. Being soundly made, many of them have survived the times. That‘s why we‘ll be calling quality "stuff for ever" like that from now on: Bates.

Turning the timer assembly by hand is no problem, but it is crucial to keep it safely in its fully advanced position, once the bike is started. Instead of using the usual hardware store spring or rubberband we recommend a professional solution. The Timer Lock assembly features a spring supported hook, which securely holds the control cable stud. For starting you quickly hook off the lever, turn the timer to its fully retarded position, and when the engine fires, turn it back to fully advanced and secure again. Dead easy and safe.

Sometimes it's the little things that make big things possible. This adapter allows the installation of Sportster forks in Big Twin frames up to 1986. Since the steering head on Sportster models is longer than on Big Twin frames, the fork stem protrudes further through the upper triple tree. A special adapter is therefore needed to compensate for this excess length. It is placed on top of the upper triple tree above the overlength fork stem. The adapter and the steering head adjusting bolt allow the adjustment of the steering head bearing clearance.

In the 1970s motorcycle designers became more and more spirited and the familiar lines and appearance of two-wheelers were radically remodeled. Daring tank and seat combinations, mostly realized in fiber glass, soon freshened the bike scene and some ideas were even picked up by large manufacturers. The Beefy Body derives from a design by the legendary Californian company Tracy, which was an industry leader in this field back then. Gas tank, seat, side panels and rear fender form a single unit and completely transform the bike. Just add a fancy paint job and your scoot will stand out in the crowd, guaranteed. Good things always come back, even if it sometimes takes some 80 years. This lock type was available as an accessory during the 1920’s and 1930’s and the Bates lock is made after a historic pattern of that era. The main advantage is that the lock always stays on the fork during the ride without the need to stow it in the saddlebag or elsewhere. To bar the wheel simply swivel the stainless steel rod (Ø 12 mm) from its home postion, guide it through the wheel to the other side of the fork and lock it there. On star hubs the brake drum is fixed by five lug bolts to the hub flange. The brake drum must not touch the spoke flange on the hub. The cast brake drums will break — especially when it is distorted by tightening the bolts. Manufacturing tolerances (aftermarket brake drums and hubs) can cause the drum to touch the hub. Before you tighten down the lug bolts, you will want to check for sufficient brake-drum to spoke flange gap and — if not present — use one of these shims.

Sometimes it's the little things in life that make the difference. Like this inconspicuous T-nut by Bates. If you want to mount a sissy bar on Big Twin rigid frames 1936-1957, this is usually done at the mounting holes for the fender braces, which are located on the axle plates. The original mounting bolts are pushed through the axle plate from behind and secured from the front with a fairly large nut (wrench size: 5/8"). The problem is on the one hand, due to lack of space and mounting bolt length, the complete rear wheel as well as the brake base plate must be removed and on the other hand that the nut mounted from the outside leaves a rather bulky impression. Bates T-nuts can be placed into the axle plate without removing the rear wheel and brake base plate. Additionally they are threaded, so the sissy bar can be mounted with a fairly plain 5/16“-24 screw. This gives the Harley-Davidson Chopper a much cleaner look. Two flats allow you to hold on to the T-nut with a 9/16“ open-end-wrench during installation.

This period looking conversion kit for the 1940-1965 thru-the-tank gas valve helps to resolve this issue quickly and easily. The insert replaces the stock valve seat and accepts most 1/8” NPT, 1/4” NPT or 22 mm petcocks at the bottom. The rod is omitted, the crossover line can be retained. Will fit all motors with 2-bolt Tillotson, Bendix or Keihin (butterfly) manifolds. Installation also requires a 2-bolt flange adapter and a carburetor support bracket, which both need to be purchased separately.

After installation the throttle disc will be pulled to open and the spring closes it again, when you release the throttle grip. Each kit comes with two springs to meet individual requirements. Draining the S&S float bowl for a jet change or to remove water from it after heavy rain can be messy with gas flowing all over your engine and hands. This drain valve replaces the stock bowl plug and makes this a quick and clean job. Simply twist off the valve cap, which also serves as a closure cap, and open the integrated tire valve with a pointed object. Then you can drain the fuel or the accumulated water into a suitable container in a controlled manner. If the float chamber should be emptied completely, you can also unscrew the tire valve completely with the valve cap to drain the complete fuel.
