Handlebar End Turn Signals

Handlebar End Turn Signals

Creative wiring, cool result.

Handlebar end turn signals are actually a German speciality. By the year 1962, the law made turn signals mandatory for motorcycles as well. The few remaining German motorcycle manufacturers reacted to this with minimal equipment: one turn signal on each "side of the vehicle," a switch, a flasher unit and a few cables - et voilà: the handlebar end turn signal was born.

Since 1987, a pair of turn signals on each side of the vehicle has been mandatory in Germany, as in most other countries. Handlebar end turn signals are therefore permitted, but only together with an additional pair of turn signals at the rear end of the motorcycle.

Stylistically, handlebar end turn signals offer a wide selection: from the classic "ox-eye" to the design products from Kellermann or motogadget.

Do handlebar end turn signals fit on every bike?

No, not on every bike. But on any that has rubber grips with holes at the ends and handlebars which are hollow throughout. The wires are routed through the handlebars and you have to drill a hole at the bottom of the handlebars in the middle between the riser clamps. A 10 mm hole is enough. Please deburr the edges of the hole, also inside. Otherwise the wires chafe with the risk of a short circuit.

Handlebar end indicators can not be used on handlebars with original throttle and timer grips up to 1974. With some accessory throttle grips with internal cable, it is possible to route internal wires.

Problems can occur with welded handlebars if the inside of the tube was not deburred before welding. Again with the with the risk of chafed wires and short circuit.
