Daytona Speed Sensor for Gearbox Mount on 4 Speed Big Twins
Daytona Speed Sensor for Gearbox Mount on 4 Speed Big Twins
Electronic speedometers are small and have cool designs - well, partially, and they don't need a cable to drive them that requires lubrication to work. Just a few thin wires. But where in the world can you get the speed signal on a classic Big Twin with a 4-speed transmission? Well, W&W has got something...
The sensor is simply screwed onto the speedometer drive on the gearbox, making use of the union nut of the cable. If you don't have a cable anymore, or your union nut is not the best anymore, you will find the suitable part in our shop, too.
The sensor needs 12 V and has three connection cables for current, ground and signal. The speedo then must be calibrated to the right number of pulses.

Daytona Speed Sensor for Speedo Cable Mount
Daytona Speed Sensor for Speedo Cable Mount
When replacing a cable driven speedometer by an electronic unit, there's always the question where to mount the indispensable sensor. This inventive converter eliminates the search for an adequate place, it simply screws to the upper end of the drive cable, picks up the rotary cable movement and sends a signal to the speedo. Works only on 12 V DC.

motogadget mo.can Adapter
motogadget mo.can Adapter
Harley-Davidson motorcycles built 2004 or later are equipped with an OBD interface (On-Board Diagnosis) as a 3-pin plug-in connection. Using the mo.can adaptor, which is simply plugged into this connector, motogadget instruments can directly read out data such as speed, engine speed and MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) from the motorcycle data bus. There is no longer any need to install and connect sensors for speed and engine speed.
The mo.can only consists of a tiny, fully moulded box, an OBD connector and a connecting cable of sufficient length. It is resistant to vibrations and the elements. The electronics are protected against voltage peaks. Its function is ensured down to 5V vehicle voltage.

Speedo Recalibration Units
Speedo Recalibration Units
When changing the gearing and/or tire size on newer models equipped with electronic speedos (LCD mileage), the speedometer is no longer calibrated and reading is incorrect. These modules will allow you to permanently readjust and recalibrate your speedo. Simply connect to the stock tranny sensor to speedo wiring harness. Only for models with Deutsch connector at the sensor.

Speed Sensors … do they really sense speed?

Bullocks, of course not. What they do is counting pulses. Just that. It's the speedo motherboard that converts the numbers of pulses into readably speed. Some speed sensors aren't even connected to a speedo but to the engine ECU that does the conversion job. The speedo reads the speed that it indicates from a data stream it gets transmitted by the ECU. The latter system is found in 2004 and up Harleys.

How do I find the right speed sensor?

For the original replacement sensors, please refer to the model assignment and the Harley-Davidson spare part numbers. We list both with the respective sensor under facts. The installation is then very simple: disconnect the old connector, replace the sensor and connect the new connector. These sensors do not need to be adjusted, the calibration is defined in the speedometer instrument.

If you do not have an original speedometer, you may also not have an original speed sensor. If the speedometer sensor has only two connection cables, it usually is a reed sensor. Reed sensors (or also called reed switches) are actuated by a magnet and do not need a supply voltage. One of the two cables is connected to the tachometer input, the other to minus.

In the sensors with three connection cables, there are three connections: Power supply, speed signal and minus. Our Daytona and MMB sensors need 12 V power from a battery. Battery-less 12 V electrics are not suitable for sensor operation.
