Sportster instruments

The sporty Big Twins FX and FXR were always equipped with Sportster parts on the front-end. That's why Sportster, many FX and FXR also share instrumentation: smaller than the fat-bob speedometers and grouped near the handlebar mounts, and garnished with indicator lights. As sporty motorcycles, these models also always had the option of connecting a tachometer. This gives the sporty rider the ability to shift gears based on RPM.

Are speedometers for Sportster and FX interchangeable?

All shaft-driven speedometers for Sportster, FX and FXR models have the 2:1 ratio in Harley terminology. That is, they are calibrated to read 60 mph at 2000 rpm of the speedometer shaft. For those who think in km/h: 1400 rpm = 60 km/h. From a purely drive point of view, the parts are interchangeable. So, if you don't like them, you can change them by hand. The fastenings are model-specific and pose no problem for the mechanic.
