Seals for primary cases and covers

The primary covers, which consist of a precisely fitting outer and inner part, i.e. those of all Sportsters and relatives and all Big Twins with four gears and more, naturally need various seals. Between the two covers and towards the engine and under the covers to check the chain tension and clutch play. Harley mechanics call them inspection covers and derby covers.

For the sheet metal covers, the matching gaskets from James are made of good, proven cork material. The surface seals for aluminum primaries are available in paper and paper with a silicone coating. One side of these seals (the side facing the cover) then detaches from the cover without leaving any residue. If the seal is otherwise undamaged, it can be used again with the correct tightening torque of the screws. But be careful: if the base and cover are worn, even a seal with a silicone coating will not work wonders. Even sealing surfaces are an important prerequisite for tight seals.
