Torque Wrenches

Torque wrenches

Never overtighten a bolt, says the craftsman. Nevertheless, overly tightened bolts and stripped threads are a common thing on used Harleys when you strip them down after puchase. Of course, this is partly due to the ageing material. However, it is often due to the mechanic's lacking "sensitivity", especially on motorcycles that have been wrenched on a lot. "I have a feel for the right torque" is simply a misjudgment. So that's why there are torque wrenches. In order for the 1/4 inch bolts in the camshaft or primary cover are no longer too tight or the crankpin nuts with the four super fine threads are not too loose.

Wrench with signal

The torque wrenches commonly used today all work with an acoustic signal. When the pre-set torque is reached, a lock is relieved with a clear "click" and the power transmission is cut for a short instant. Because the built-in locking mechanisms are continuous but cannot be set endlessly from zero to ∞, there are torque wrenches with different ranges: up to 15 Nm for work on oil pumps and other engine units with screws up to 1/4", then from 10 to 60 Nm for most work on handlebars, forks, frames, primaries etc. and with 40-200 Nm for axle nuts, clutch hub nuts or even crank pins.

Treat torque wrenches well

They are precision instruments. That's why you keep them in a box or their proper case and don't leave them carelessly anywhere. Do not drop them, and therefore do not place them on the workbench or a table in such a way that they could accidentally fall off. You only set them before starting work and then release the mechanism again before putting them away. Incidentally, unlike many others, our Bahco torque wrenches also work counterclockwise, so you can also use them for the piniongear nuts on Pan, Shovel and Evo engines, for example.
