The successor models of the very first mechanical oil pumps mounted on the timing side of Harley-Davidson engines can be identified by the absence of a sight glass. These later oil pumps were equipped with small springs to control oil flow. The small compression springs with factory no. MA853 were used in all oil pumps from late 1922 through 1933, and even in 1934 in the last single-cylinder models. Each oil pump was fitted with three springs.
