On older Harley-Davidson motorcycles, one may spot springer forks where the tubes do not sit flush with the top triple tree or the central handlebar casting. Not only does this look untidy, indeed the clamping of the tubes in the triple tree is less than optimal.

The solution to the issue — which can occur on all frame and steering head bearing combinations regardless of year — is a turned-down, i.e. shorter, steering stem nut.

With this nut, tapered roller bearings must be used, as the centering cone for the upper inner race of a ball bearing is missing.
