Bulbs P18/5W (BAY15d)
Bulbs P18/5W (BAY15d)
For the same power—meaning the same wattage—a 6 V bulb draws twice as much current as a 12 V bulb. To limit the current, 6 V bulbs therefore often have a lower power rating. The brake light filaments of these bulbs consume just 18 W but are still bright enough to be perfectly seen by your followers. 5 W are ok for position lights.

Bulbs P21/5W (BAY15d)
Bulbs P21/5W (BAY15d)
P21/5W bulbs with double-contact BAY15d socket are typically used in taillights. The low power 5 W filament serves as position light, the high power 21 W filament serves as brake light. The BAY socket can only be installed in one direction.

Bulbs P21/5W (BA15d)
These 6V versions of a taillight or turn signal bulb have a 5W filament for the running light and a 21W filament for the brake or turn signal light. The base features a symmetrical arrangement of the locating pins and contact plates. As the bulb can therefore be installed rotated by 180°, it is advisable to perform a function test before refitting the lens.

Bulbs C (SV8.5-8)
Bulbs C (SV8.5-8)
These torpedo-shaped festoon bulbs are more commonly found in older cars. If you’ve customised your Harley —blessed be TÜV— to original Hella “ox-eye” handlebar mounted turn signals, you’ll need these bulbs from time to time as replacements for exactly those indicators. By the way, these bulbs will occur in some period taillights, too.

Bulb G18.5 (BA15d)
Bulb G18.5 (BA15d)
A pretty special type of dual-filament bulb you won’t find at your average gas station. It’s mainly used for older bikes like the Knucklehead or K and V models. Small round glass globe, about 18 mm in diameter, with two contacts for 6 V. One is dim with just 5 W for the tail light, the other bright with 21 W for the brake light. The base isn’t the usual BAY type with two offset pins that only fits one way into the socket — it’s a BA type, which means you can insert it 180° reversed into the bayonet socket. So don’t be too quick to curse after changing the bulb if the tail light suddenly ends up brighter than the brake light. Just flip the bulb around.

Bulbs for taillights

Pure taillights without an integrated brake light are rarely on the road anymore. Even with old Harleys, which were first registered well before the time after which a brakelight became mandatory - by now most owners have upgraded for safety reasons.

Bulbs for taillights do not need to shine as brightly as those for brakelights and therefore draw power below 10W, bulbs for brake lights draw around 20W or more. Bulbs for combined brake/taillights have two wattages because they also have two filaments: e.g. 21/5W or 23/8W are common values. When choosing, you have to consider not only the voltage (6 or 12 V) and the wattage, but also the socket, i.e. the part with which the bulb makes contact with the wires. If in doubt, simply compare the dimensions and number of contacts with our drawings.
