The hydraulically damped telescopic fork
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome: the telescopic fork. Introduced in 1935 by BMW with their R 12 and R 17 models, this fork design has evolved over the decades into a universal fork. Even companies that went other ways with individual models offer the majority of their line with a telescopic fork. The telescopic fork has a few advantages, which it always outperform other front wheel guidance concepts. Even though the telescopic fork tends to be less responsive, it offers much better feedback from the front wheel. For the rider, this means more direct feel and less "sponginess". The poorer response comes from the large friction surfaces inside and some bracing of the tubes against each other. With the right oil, minimized bushing clearance and high-quality sealing rings, however, something can definitely be done. Another technical advantage is that all the springs and damping elements are well protected inside, and the tubes, which slide inside one another, are easier to manufacture than legs and rockers of Springer forks. And what is of particular interest to the racer is the lower masses compared other fork designs, resulting in better handling.
Hydraulic forks on Harleys
The first one arrived in 1949 with the Hydra-Glide (Panhead), the small two-stroke models followed suit in 1952. The side-valve model series also got its telescopic fork in 1952 with the K model. Continued with the Sportster in 1957. The Servi-Car was the last model to be converted, starting in 1958. All subsequent models and model series were equipped with telescopic forks from the beginning.
Finding original well working telescopic forks has become very difficult. We offer reproductions of the Electra Glide forks (4-speed models) and also spare parts for K-model, Sportster and FX, Hydra and Electra Glide. Our development department has also found a way to adapt the last version of the Sportster fork with 39 mm tube diameter for Big Twins. And being genuine petrolheads, we also offer reproductions of Ceriani racing forks.
