Andrews Individual Close Ratio Gear Sets
Andrews Individual Close Ratio Gear Sets
Complete selection of Andrews transmission components. Why Andrews transmission parts? Andrews gears and shafts are made from stronger-than-stock materials. They have heat-treated and polished surfaces where necessary for smoother and faster shift operations, which results in much longer durability of all transmission components. It's hard to believe there is such a big difference between Andrews gears and others until you ride a bike with these products installed.

Andrews Complete Close Ratio Gear Sets
Andrews Complete Close Ratio Gear Sets
Used for the restoration of worn-out stock 4-speed transmissions or building new custom transmissions for Knuckleheads, Big Flatheads, Panheads and Shovelhead models 1936-1976. With an Andrews gear set transmissions last longer, shift faster, and just plain run better. In addition, you will receive optimized gear ratios since each kit includes specific close ratio gear combinatons for an improved riding experience.
Each kit includes all gears, two shift clutches and two shift forks. Shafts and small parts kits must be ordered separately.

Carlo's Main Shaft and Main Drive Gear with Needle Bearing
Carlo's Main Shaft and Main Drive Gear with Needle Bearing
Ok, it served us well for decades, the trusty main drive gear bushing, but it is certainly possible to improve this feature as we can see in the later 5-speed transmissions. So you simply modernize the set-up by installing needle bearings? Not quite. A mechanical engineer from good old Germany really did his homework here and came out with some extra fine products. We are looking at high end precision parts manufactured after the latest German automotive industry standards and when it comes to material selection, surface hardening, structure and function of components they are second to nothing. Weak points in the original design were consequently eliminated:
Mainshaft updated with rolling bearing surface, Redesigned main drive gear with bore for needle bearing, Double "full circle" needle bearing support in lieu of bushing,
The results are the precise alignment and guide of main drive gear to mainshaft, plus significantly improved service life and oil tightness. Only Carlo’s mainshafts serve as replacement parts. These, in turn, can be used as stock replacements.

PanAm Transmission Vent Screw
PanAm Transmission Vent Screw
Transmissions need to be vented. If they don't have a vent or it's clogged, pressure builds up in the transmission housing, causing the seals to leak. On the 4-speed Big Twin models, Harley-Davidson solved the ventilation problem with a screw that had a thin blind bore the length of it, which met an equally thin cross bore in the screw head. The L-shaped bore allowed the inside of the gearbox to “breathe”. Anyone who has been riding old 4-speed Harleys for a while knows from their own experience that this breather screw doesn't stay clean for long and either gets clogged up by dirt particles or, when riding in the rain or washing, even lets water get into the inside of the gearbox.
This is not possible with the PanAm breather screw. With the help of a short nipple and a rubber hose, the original 90° bore is turned into a 180° turn, and no more dirt or water will pass through. The countersink of the screw head fits original ratchet tops from 1965-early 1979 or accessory ratchet tops. Earlier original tops had a steeper countersink angle. If you don't mind the countersink angle mismatch, you will of course be able to make use of the PanAm screw on earlier ratchet tops or on tank-shift tops.

Knuckle, Pan and Shovel: Transmission repair with spare parts and accessories for 4-speed transmissions

The last four-speed gearboxes were fitted to Harley's 1340 Big Twins almost 40 years ago. A repair would therefore be nothing unusual, even if these parts were built really solidly. Incorrect (too tight) chain tension for example exerts a lot of strain on the transmission output bearings. The two shifting clutches and the recesses in the gearwheels will develop round "edges" at some point. So it's time for a general overhaul at the latest when your transmission begins jumping out of gear frequently.

The bearing bush in 4th gear

The weight of the clutch exerts excessive strain on the bearing bushing in the 4th main drive gear. Even in 4th gear, i.e. when the main shaft is not rotating in the bushing at all, the bushing is under load, but then hardly gets any oil without the shaft rotation. Thus it is easy to imagine that sooner or later this said bushing will wear and call for exchange.

No grease, please

There are rumours about Harley owners who have run Shell Ambroleum grease instead of oil in the gearbox to avoid the constant leaking. Unfortunately, grease means the death of the plain and needle bearings in the Harley Big Twin 4-speed gearbox - a complete repair is inevitable. The factory had something in mind when they prescribed monograde oil.

Don't despair, ask Andrews

... or BAKER, or JIMS or PanAm. Since the 1970s, Andrews parts have been among the preferred parts when it comes to gearbox repairs. Since the 1990s, JIMS, Carlo's, PanAm and BAKER have been added to W&W Cycles' selection of 4-speed transmission parts. In any case, the right stuff for every emergency and occasion.
