Performance transmission top assemblies by the US company BAKER. These stock replacement Ratchet Tops are available in your choice of an FL or FX shift system, with the FL systems set up as bottom pull and FX systems set up for top pull.
All tops feature billet steel machined and case hardened shift systems that rotate on Permaglide bushings and a linear detent system for a smooth repeatable shift each time. The lids are cut out of Aircraft grade 6061-T6 billet aluminum. A hidden top cover vent design eliminates clogged vent screws. The shifter pawl backing plate is hard anodized for wear resistance.

The N1 shifter drum by Baker converts a standard FL shifter cover (ratchet top 1952-1979) from the stock 1N234 shift sequence to 4321N (Neutral all the way up). This is very helpful when drag racing or at traffic light "encounters", because you just stomp down on the shift lever from Neutral to upshift. Jockey shifters and suicide clutch users also benefit from this set-up because the "all the way forward" neutral makes quick stops safer.

Shift drum, cover, etc.

The gear change mechanism on the 4-speed Big Twin transmission can be removed and repaired separately. When selecting the parts, it should be clear which year group the assembly you want to repair belongs to:

  • Tank shifter 1936-1964 (the shift linkage ends at a simple lever that moves a few degrees with each gear engaged)
  • Foot shift 1952-1978 ("ratchet top" because of the automatic gearshift with ratchet mechanism, the engaged gear is not recognizable from the outside)
  • Foot-operated gearshift 1979-1984 ("dome gearbox" because of the dome on the gearbox housing)

The ratchet top has two different gearshift rollers: one for the FLHs with a bottom-mounted ratchet mechanism and one for the FX with a top-mounted shift linkage. If in doubt, the contact details below will help you untangle the problems.
