Throttle and ignition cables until 1974
1974 is the transition year for the new throttle grips with an external throttle cable. All earlier throttle grips on Harley-Davidson motorcycles moved a mechanism located inside the handlebars, as did the left grips, which were responsible for adjusting the ignition timing until 1964. The left and right parts were identical. When twisting the grips backwards to the driver the left cable was pulled, the right one pushed. To ensure the operation of the transmission, both pulls were stiff steel wires.
