Cannonball 8 mm Belt Drive Kits for 45" (750cc) Flatheads
For a conventional 750cc side-valve, the original primary drive or something of equal value is usually sufficient.
However if you consider to increase the power of your 750cc engine and might even takle a spin on the race track, your 3-disc clutch will probably not be the appropriate companion.
In any case, this Cannonball primary drive offers traction to the very end of a 750cc Flatty's tuneability. CNC – machined steel and aluminium components, 5 friction discs and a sturdy aluminium pressure plate with spring-loaded steelballs assure a smooth frictional connection. The high quality of all components, perfect function and durability are the main aspects that have been taken care of while creating this product. Clean disengagement, engagement such as easy adjustment are nice side effects of this.
Anyone who rides it knows what we are talking about. But surely people will also enjoy this drive if they don't have a start number on their springer fork.
By the way, this primary drive is perfectly suited for hand clutch conversion, as the spring forces are comparatibly low. The result is a smooth, easy and precise clutch operation at the hand lever.

These are 2” versions for more of engine power. The clutch shell will not fit into standard primary cases.

These belt drives are designed for enclosed primary fitment, either within aluminum primaries or within tin (stamped steel) covers. For the later aluminum primary models (1965-1984) two kits are offered for kickstart and electric start models. The earlier tin primary models are available for tapered (1937-1954) or splined shaft (1955-1964) applications, kickstart only.

Dry and without oil stains: belt drives for the primary transmission

The biggest handicap of the early belt drives was slippage. The very first Harleys tamed the slipping belt with belt tensioners and used the slipping as a kind of clutch replacement for taking off or stopping. However, the increasing power of the engines brought an early end to drive belts at Harley-Davidson in the mid-1910s. Apart from the three-year factory experiment (FXB and FXSB models 1980-1983), Harley still uses the primary chain today. But of course that doesn't stop a skilled mechanic from developing a smooth and dry-running primary drive based on drive belts, which have been available in excellent quality since the mid-1980s. The result of extensive development work by Cannonball, BDL and Primo for 750cc and 4-speed Big Twins, Softails and Dynas can be viewed and of course purchased here.
