Paints and coatings

Paints are not just for looks, they also provide protection and have technical functions. Protection, well, is obvious to everyone, bare metal surfaces are susceptible to corrosion and paint keeps rust at bay. The technical functions of paints are more difficult to grasp: heat makes metals more susceptible to corrosion and chemical influences. When applied to cylinders and cylinder heads, heat-resistant paints provide heat dissipation as well as an attractive appearance. And older cast aluminum housings in particular tend to leak and "sweat" from pores or sometimes cavities. When applied to the inside of the engine housing, suitable paints or coatings close pores and prevent the cast parts from becoming saturated with oil. Chrome on the exhaust is not always desirable in historically correct restorations. Heat-resistant paints ensure the correct, contemporary appearance here. Paints or coatings on the inside of tanks prevent corrosion caused by humidity and fuels containing alcohol. Internal tank coatings also ensure tightness.
