Pictures of the good old days, i.e. the Forties and the Fifties, often show bikes which sport so-called wheel covers. These were very popular accessories in their days, because they gave the wheels a completely different appearance. These wheel covers are exact reproductions of the period parts, hand-made from industrial finish stainless steel which allows you to polish, chrome or paint them. They fit 16” wheels with star hubs →1966 or 1967-1972 hubs and come with the correct small parts. Slight modification of axle spacers may be necessary.

There are situations, where it is necessary to increase space between star hub and brake drum, so the latter clears the spoke flange. These shims can be used to achieve this.

Star hub reproductions that are equipped with tapered roller bearings require an uniform 11/16” axle center part. Harley Davidson axles for Star hubs (all Knuckles and Pans, SV Big Twins 1937-1966, 750 twins 1937-1951 rear, 1966 Shovels) have a center part with only the first 1-1/4” measuring 11/16” while the rest is reduced in diameter. On this reduced diameter a 11/16” Timken bearing will not fit, of course. On the other hand, a uniform diameter goes very well alongside with OEM star hub bearing sleeves, as these sleeves only touch the axle on their initial 3/4”. (The other side is borne by the brake side spacer.) Slight modifications may be required if you notice excessive wheel sideplay.

Fumbling the tube valve through its hole in the wheel rim can be a real pain. This smart tool makes the job a lot easier with its 21 cm cable and "fishing hook". Just route the cable through the rim hole and attach its threaded tip to the valve core. Now you can pull the core through the rim without pinching your fingers or damaging the threads. With valve remover inside the handle.
