The Baker N1 shift drum kit for Harley-Davidson 4-speed transmissions with ratchet-top cover (1952–1979) changes the stock FL shift pattern from 1-N-2-3-4 to 4-3-2-1-N, with neutral positioned at the top.
This shift logic makes engaging gears from a standstill easier, as all riding gears can be selected by simply shifting down from neutral. This is particularly useful in drag racing, city traffic, or at stoplights.
On motorcycles equipped with a jockey shifter and suicide clutch, the upward-positioned neutral also offers a functional advantage by making quick stops and securing the bike easier. The kit installs into the existing FL transmission top cover and is designed to match the stock 4-speed transmission architecture.
With an FX shifter cover 1974-1979 shift sequence changes to N1234 (Neutral all the way down).
