4 speed Big Twins from 1982 on were equipped with oil filter cartridges that were screwed to a base plate behind the transmission. Sportsters 1980-early 1984 used the same filter, but the base plate sat over the transmission or on the front motor mount. Sportsters with alternator had the oil filter mounted in front of the front cylinders, just like the later models. The pore size of these filters suit the gear oil pump of the Big Twins and the gerotor pumps of the Sportsters.

All 5 and 6 speed Harley-Davidson Big Twins have these cartridges, as well as all Evolution Sportster models late 1984→ and Buells →2002. These filters have 6 or 10 µm pores. Dyna models with Evolution engine use 5.5” long cartridges as a standard. This provides some extra ounces of oil to these sporty bikes.

The oil filter cartridges from S&S Cycle
fit all Evolution Big Twin and Sportster engines and, of course, Buell models up to 2002. With a 30 µm pore size, they provide finer filtration than the original Harley-Davidson filters for Evo engines. Since these filters were originally designed for S&S engines, and S&S engines from 05/01/2000 onward were equipped with a hex-head drain plug, the sealing washer for this drain plug is included.

Oil filter cartridges – disposable filters for the oil flow

Oil filter cartridges differ first of all in the thread used to screw them on. A possible second criterion is the length of the cartridge. Not all Harley models offer unlimited installation space. Color, finish or brand are only important in third place. Perf-form filter cartridges have proven themselves for Harleys. The standard thread for Harley oil filter cartridges is 3/4”, with two exceptions: FL and FX 4-speed models from 1982 and Sportster 1980-1984 had M16 threads and the V-Rod model series had M22 threads.

Why use disposable filters?

Before the invention of the oil filter cartridge, washable filters were quite common. However, the filtering efficiency of washable filters always depends on the treatment, i.e. who washes the filter element how carefully with which cleaning agent. The disposable filter is not as environmentally friendly or sustainable, but the advantages lie in the handling and possible warranty claims. The filter manufacturer guarantees consistent quality and – now we are definitely causing a shit storm – the engine manufacturer can rely on it much more than on the individual mechanic. And changing a cartridge takes only a few minutes, even for DIY mechanics, and saves costs.
