Grips

Turning all the way - handlebar grips

In the 1910s, many motorcyclists in Europe looked enviously at their American colleagues. They had something that became standard in the Old World not before the end of the Roaring Twenties: Grips on the handlebars that could be turned to regulate the throttle or throttle slider and the ignition timing. In 1903, a certain Mr. Hedström registered a patent for such a handle and transmission mechanism. The guys at Harley-Davidson recognized the advantage of these handles from the beginning, but instead of just copying them, they came up with their own mechanism. And Mr. Hedstrom's patent was bypassed.

Grips? Twist handles? What the h...?

The terms are used rather inconsistently. To make sure everyone finds what they need, we offer grip rubbers — we call them grip sets because our rubbers are often made of aluminum or post-war hard plastic — as well as complete twist-grip mechanism sets with all the inner parts needed to move the cables. Accessories like grip end plugs or individual replacement parts are also available. These parts fit 1-inch handlebars or the 1-1/8-inch Ø twist grips of early Harley models. Many sets and accessories are suitable for OEM-style bikes, while others are perfect for custom builds.
