Our reproductions of the original Harley-Davidson generators from 1958→ feature unparalleled craftsmanship. In these Harley-Davidson generator replicas, for example, the connections between the armature winding and the commutator are spot-welded instead of soldered, which significantly increases durability. The insulation of the armature fields is made from hard maple wood rather than paper, further enhancing quality and longevity. You can rely 100% on these Harley generators, no matter how far the road takes you. They are perfect for restoring Harley-Davidson vintage bikes, custom bikes, classic motorcycles, and Harley classic bikes.

Available as stock replacement for 58 and 65A type generators used on 1958→ models or as a conversion for 1932 - 1957 models, where the earlier 32E 3-brush generator was factory equipment.

This conversion generator has, contrary to the stock 1958→ 58 and 65A type generators, ¼"-24 mounting bolts just like the stock 32E generator and can be used on 1932-1957 models without modification.

Both versions utilize the later style 1958→ armature, which works on 1932-1957 and 1958→ cases. The later style 1958→ (eg WW 13-710) sprocket must be used. The →1957 armature sprocket can NOT be used. Likewise, oil deflector plates and regulators 1958→ must be used. The engine drive gears can remain unchanged.

Polarizing Generators

New or refurbished generators should be polarized to correctly establish field magnetism. First you connect the generator correctly to the regulator and the latter to the battery. Then you short battery and armature connectors on your regulator just for a snatch. Alternatively you jumper the positive pole on your battery and the generator A terminal. Don't worry: The short spark is harmless.

Generator Gears 32E

Generator Gears 32E

The drive gears of Harley-Davidson type 32E generators with three brushes are mounted on the armature shaft with four keyways. They are secured with a cotter pin. Type 32E generators were used until 1957. Gear backlash is adjusted by means of shims of varying thickness between the generator and the engine case.

Generator Gears 58/65A

The drive gears of the two-brush generators used on Harley-Davidson V-twin models from 1958 onward are secured with a nut. In addition to being positively located on the shaft, this design also transfers the drive force via the oil slinger to the right armature bearing.

Generator Oil Deflectors 58/65A

Just as on the earlier three-brush generators used on Harley-Davidson Twin models, the later two-brush generator fitted to Panhead, Sportster, and early Shovel engines also uses an oil deflector to prevent oil from working its way past the bearing and seal into the interior of the generator. Oil-soaked brushes and commutators not only stop the charging system from working properly, they usually make a generator overhaul necessary as well.
