Transmission for Sportster 5-Speed

Sportster five-speed transmission: the best of both worlds

What do you get when you mix an older Sportster transmission with a Big Twin 5-speed transmission? Exactly, a 5-speed transmission in a Sportster housing. The clutch sits directly on the mainshaft, as on the Big Twins, and the gearwheel for 5th (= direct) gear moves to the right, because Sportster. For space reasons, both shafts sit on top of each other. Nevertheless, both shafts get enough oil and the loose gears are mounted on needle bearings as on the Big Twins. The gearing for the belt wheel is the same as on the Big Twins, as is the gearing for the fixed and sliding gears on the main and auxiliary shafts, so that gears 1 to 4 are interchangeable with the respective parts of a Softail, for example: Transmission production at the most rational level!

Completely Sportster-like

is the placement of both shafts and gears on a common plate together with the shift mechanism. After removing the clutch, the entire transmission cassette can be removed to the left. Only the gear wheel that carries the belt wheel remains untouched in the housing. Somehow quite clever, a Sportster 5-speed gearbox like this.
