Located in Blue Island Illinois, the Smith´s new company began by selling lightweight aluminum pushrods for Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. S&S HI-4N Ignition

A single/dual fire ignition system with many state-of-the-art features built in a very compact unit. It has four rotary switches for mode selection, advance rate, and rev limit (1500-9900 rpm). Modes are: single fire, dual fire , OEM curve, race curve, kick start, electric start , The aluminum housing protects against vibration, moisture, dirt and improves heat dissipation. Its flange features degree and advance direction markings on the flange. Installation becomes easier with the convenient cable notch in the housing which also helps to prevent cable damage. Built onto the back plate, the sensor/magnet housings protect the sensors from damage during installation. The sensor housings contain advanced flux concentrators (intensify magnetic fields) with high temperature resistant samarium/cobalt magnets for accurate and reliable triggering. For street use the manufacturer recommends coils with a minimum of 2 Ω. Coils with 4Ω or higher may be used but may not produce optimum output.

S&S Twin Cam Style Oil Filter Bracket

These filter brackets are machined from solid billet aluminum and polished, but since looking good isn't everything they have some very useful features, too. First, the position of the filter has been shifted slightly to give additional clearance between the filter body and the crankcase for easier filter installation and removal. Second, they are machined to make it easy to install an oil cooler in the pressure side of the system. An oil coolers is especially useful for big inch applications, when towing a trailer or for riding in hot weather conditions. If the cooler is not needed, simply install pipe plugs (included) instead of the hose fittings.

S&S KN-Series Engines

Knucklehead - the name describes a true legend and this engine design is without a doubt one of the important milestones in the history of Harley-Davidson. Introduced in the year 1936 the ohv-engined models in short time became synonyms for sporting, fast and reliable touring machines. Economically this layout proved to be a huge success for the Motor Company, too, because brand followers - and many others - quickly realized the outstanding qualities of this motorcycle. Design and technology of the Knucklehead turned out to be supremely sound and it became the prototype of all Milwaukee Big Twins, which significantly influenced all successive model groups down to the present day. The KN-Series engines by S&S closely resemble the appearance of a stock Knucklehead engine. However, numerous reforms enhance power, engine life, and reliability. The main improvement in design is the 1958-65 style flywheel assembly, which uses a splined sprocket shaft and a Timken sprocket shaft bearing on the drive side. This increased flywheel stability and strenght became necessary to handle the significantly increased power development. The rocker arm cover “tins” are another modern improvement. They are made from die-cast aluminum, and instead of being held in place by the valve guide, they are held down by valve spring pressure. A special gasket on the bottom of the lower “tin” provides a positive seal, and is much easier to service if needed, since the valve guides do not have to be pressed. The selection includes 93” (1560 cc) engines with crankcases for early style chassis thru 1947, with 1955-64 tin primary and 1936-64 transmissions. S&S KN-Series engines come completely assembled and ready to run with a electronic S&S Super Stock ignition system and Super E carburetor.

S&S Tapered Quick Set up Kits with Air Cleaner and Exhaust

Okay, so maybe your budget isn´t ready for a new big ínch S&S engine yet. But better performance is still within your reach and you can have 10 extra rear wheel horsepower at a price that is about the best deal going. These kits consist of a set of S&S performance mufflers, a high flowing S&S teardrop air cleaner, and a jet kit to re-jet stock carburetors with all components installed in less than an hour. There is no engine work to do, and everything you need is included in the kits. They will fit on either a stock carburetor or a stock 2001-up Delphi style fuel injected throttle body. With the jet kit you can dial in the stock carb for maximum power gains and improved rideability when installed on carbureted bikes. Our testing has shown that fuel map adjustments are normally needed when installed on fuel injected models. It is recommended that the bike be calibrated by your local dealer to insure that the engine is receiving sufficient fuel.

S&S SH80-Series Shovelhead Style Engines

Sometimes stock is enough and this is exactly what the SH80 Shovelhead engine provides. 80 cubic inches of Shovelhead performance which will reliably propel both your daily driver or your end-of-the-world expedition bike. Fully assembled with the best components S&S has to offer, so factory specs are at least met and in most parts exceeded. The latter include bullet-proof steel flywheels, reinforced connecting rods, billet oil pump, billet rocker boxes, roller rockerarms and a billet gear cover. The installed S&S H-grind cam is a dead-on reproduction of the stock H-D cam. SH80 engines come without intake manifold, carburetor and ignition so you can choose whatever seems appropriate for your needs. Crankcases and cylinder heads have a cast finish, cylinders are black powder-coated and the gear cover and rocker boxes are polished. Top end oiling is provided through the pushrods which makes external oil lines obsolete.

The legend lives! For die-hard Shovelhead enthusiasts we offer these complete, ready-to-install Long Block engines, assembled by S&S builders with the finest parts on the market today. Start with the bullet proof crankcases, flywheels, cylinders, and heads which proved their performance since so many years, and finish with the latest premium valve train components. Crankcases and cylinder heads come with natural aluminum finish, the cast iron cylinders are black powdercoated. Billet gear cover, tappet guides, and rocker boxes look outstanding and offer the kind of performance you expect from an industry leader like S&S. What you can’t see inside the engine is just as impressive. The S&S Shovelhead style tappet guides are designed around the quiet, dependable Evolution style tappets. The corrected tappet guide bore geometry assures correct valve timing with carefully selected S&S Evolution style camshafts installed in the gearcase. The unique adjustable Quickee pushrods are collapsible for easy removal and installation, but are stronger than stock style pushrods. Inside the billet rocker covers are S&S’s exclusive forged roller rocker arms. Top end oiling is provided through the pushrods which makes external oil lines obsolete. To let them breathe deeply all S&S Shovelhead engines are supplied with a Super E carburetor because tests showed that it provides the best performance on the street. Last but not least S&S SH engines are equipped with S&S Super Stock ignition systems. All these features result in Shovelhead engines with the kind of quiet power that some folks may just have a hard time believing.

S&S V80-Series Evo Style Engines

For those who don’t want to go “big inch”, the S&S V80 engine provides a down-to-earth performance solution. With the same displacement and physical dimensions as a stock Harley-Davidson Evolution engine, the V80 fits in a stock frame just like the original power plant, but packs a bit more punch, thanks to the S&S 508 camshaft, 585 valve springs and high flow S&S cylinder heads. The V80 is built from the same superior materials as the larger S&S performance engines, so engine life is excellent. Available with natural aluminum or black powder coat finishes. Rocker housings and nose cone cover are chromed. Fuel and ignition systems are not included, so you can use the carburetor, air cleaner, and aftermarket ignition you may already have. The cylinder heads allow installation of stock length manifolds. V80 Evo Style engines are EFI compatible with aftermarket intake componenets and module - calibration required.

S&S Super Stock Alternator Crankcases 1970→

The guys from S&S did it again. It can be seen bright and clear that the folks from Viola, Wisconsin, know their stuff and actually build engines and not just engine cases. S&S Super Stock crankcases allow complete installation of any flywheel assembly in less than one hour and are designed to meet the needs of modern engine builders. S&S cases come with: Timken sprocket shaft bearing and races, cam needle bearing pre-installed , pinion shaft main bearing race pressed in and line-honed, pinion shaft bearing , Even the cylinder studs are already in place which results in substantial savings in labour. Additional parts supplied include case bolts and crankcase fittings, timing and magnetic drain plugs and instructions. As stock replacements or all-out racing applications these cases are made for the performance enthusiast. They are cast from 356-T6 heat treated aluminum alloy and additional material has been added to key areas for strength but these improvements do not affect fitting in stock frames. No grinding and special clearancing is necessary. State-of-the-art features like maximized crankcase oil scavenging efficiency and improved oiling methods add up to an overall construction that is hard to beat. Available for 1970-1999 Big Twins. S&S Crankcase Breather Reed Valve Evolution

The Evolution style S&S breather reed valve replaces the standard rotary breather valve in 1993→ Evolution Big Twin style engines. Installation is fast and simple. No aligning timing marks, and no rotating parts. There is a +.030“ oversized reed valve for engines with heavily damaged breather bores. How does it work? Unlike the rotary breather valve that has been used in Harley-Davidson big twin engines since the 1920‘s, the S&S crankcase breather reed valve is not dependent on the rotation of the crankshaft to make it open and close. Therefore the opening and closing times are not determined by crankshaft position. The functional part of the reed valve consists of three steel reeds that are normally in the closed position. When the pistons travel downward in the cylinders, the air in the crankcase is compressed and pressure in the crankcase below the pistons increases. This pressure causes the reeds to open, allowing the air, oil and oil mist in the crankcase to escape into the cam chest. When the pistons change direction and begin traveling back upward in the cylinders, a vacuum is created in the crankcase. The vacuum causes the reeds to close, preventing air from entering the crankcase. The effect is that a slight vacuum is maintained in the crankcase and oil scavenging is greatly improved. This is most significant at high rpm when the time available to get the air out is the shortest.

S&S has teamed up with the Gates Corporation, a leading manufacturer of power transmission belts, to offer a series of secondary drive belts for many popular V-twin models. These belts feature Gates’ super strong X3N carbon cord material, which is significantly stronger than the Aramid cables used in many OEM final drive belts.

Best suited for stroker motors up to 88 cui.with 9.5:1 and higher compression ratio or big inch engines up to 98 cui and compression ratios up to 9.5 - 10:1. Moderate duration makes for great mid range performance where most riding is done. Hi-lift springs and collars and adjustable pushrods are required. All clearances must be checked.

The S&S 510C camshaft set is designed to be used with the stock H-D chain drive system and is an economical way to improve the performance of stock and slightly modified street engines. The S&S 510C cams are as quiet as stock but produce significant power increases across the rpm range, especially above 3000 rpm. The 510C cams are compatible with the stock splined chain sprocket used in 2000-up Twin Cam engines, but may be used in 1999 engines if the H-D 2000-up style splined rear cam sprocket is used. S&S’s 1999 FXD test bike produced 62 horsepower in stock con-figuration. Horsepower jumped to over 82 with 88 ft-lb. of torque after the installation of S&S .510" camshafts, adjustable pushrods, an S&S Super E carburetor and air cleaner, 6200 RPM Screamin’ Eagle ignition module, and S&S slip-on mufflers.

Timing chain or gears? That is here the question. In High Performance engines S&S Cycle prefers gears so their camshaft design for the Twin Cam models features new gears which replace the stock chain drive, sprocket and tensioner system for the cams. While being only slightly noisier than a chain gears incorporate some very important advantages: increased timing accuracy by eliminating chain lash, almost zero wear compared to a chain, no wear particles in engine oil from tensioner & guides, absolutely safe operation, gears cannot fail and tear, The latter is a very important factor with the installation of high lift cams and strong valve springs. S&S Gear Drive camshafts are sold by W&W as complete kits which consist of two camshafts with pressed-on inner drive gears, two outer cam gears, cam bearing plate, four bearings, small parts and gasket.

S&S New Style Stock Replacement 1200 cc High Compression Pistons

S&S forged stock replacement pistons for Harley-Davidson Big Twin models 1936-84. The modern alloys used in these pistons, coupled with the advanced skirt profiles, result in low engine noise and long engine life that could only be achieved with cast pistons in the past. They are available with 9:1 high compression. Sold as complete kits with front and rear piston, rings, bolts and clips.

S&S Pistons Evo Sportster Conversion 883cc-1200cc

An easy and economic way to increase displacement of 883 and 1100 Evo Sportster models to 1200cc. This kit with 3-1/2” bore forged pistons only requires to bore the stock cylinders from 3 inch to 3-1/2 bore, or purchase new 3-1/2 inch bore cylinders. No combustion chamber modifications or flywheel rebalancing is necessary. Compression ratio will be a very streetable 9.5:1. The piston skirts are coated for reduced friction during break-in.

S&S Breather Conversion Kits

Improved breather hardware to retrofit S&S Super E air cleaners. Advantages over the earlier system are in that the fittings and hoses plug on the cylinder head behind the backing plate and do not need to be removed for service on filter or carburetor. Coated washers are used instead of O-rings which are much more durable and seal better to prevent leaks.

S&S Super E Carburetor Kits

The S&S Super E and G carburetors are specifically designed for Harley-Davidson Big Twin and Sportster engines. They feature adjustable accelerator pump for instant throttle response at any rpm. The ejector nozzle is located in line between the main discharge tube and the butterfly for undisturbed air flow. The new filter element has 19% more filtering area and combined with other design changes makes up to 14% more flow. S&S Super E & G are approximately 40 mm shorter than Super B carbs and provide easy clearance for Fat Bob tank applications and good rider comfort. The Super E carburetor has a 48 mm throat and is recommended for use on any Big Twin and Sportster engine with stock displacement or big bore/stroker lower ends, aftermarket exhaust systems and cams.

S&S Rocker Arms and Shafts

S&S Super Stock Shovelhead Cylinder Heads

Primarily designed for stock replacement applications where traditional looks and improved performance are important. These cylinder heads are made from the same high-quality aircraft-cylinder head material like the Evolution heads. The intake port is the same diameter and is positioned in the same location as stock which means stock manifolds bolt right up. A directional vane like the one used in S&S Evo heads to route the air around the valve stem and guide area is located in the floor of the port. Standard intake valve diameter is stock at 1 15/16“. The combustion chamber is identical to stock enabling installation on any engine with hemispherical domed pistons. The exhaust port is also stock configuration and readily accepts stock style exhaust systems. Standard exhaust valve diameter is also stock at 1 3/4“. The pre-installed .590“ lift valve springs are used for greater cam lift versatility, the valve seats are compatible with present day unleaded fuel. Although these heads for Shovel big Twins are designed for stock replacement applications, flow characteristics have been improved up to 9% more flow. S&S Shovelhead cylinder heads easily bolt on and fit like stock. Frame and other clearancing problems are non-existent. Exhaust systems with stock dimensions can be used. Stock rocker cover assemblies are not included and are installed using hardware provided. Each High Output Super Stock Shovelhead cylinder head kit includes front and rear cylinder heads completely assembled with valve seats, valve guides, valves, valve springs, spring collars, valve keepers and valve guide seals ready to run. S&S has something for Shovelhead engines that are in need of a new top end. In a lot of cases it just isn’t worth it to try to rebuild the old, cracked, worn out cylinder heads or to bore the stock cylinders again. The S&S Shovelhead style top end kits provide everything you need to replace the top end of a 74“ or 80“ Shovelhead engine. They include pistons, rings, cylinders, cylinder heads, gaskets and hardware. Valves and springs are pre-installed and pistons are pre-fit to the cylinders, so there is no machine work to be done and very little down time. Kits for 74“ engines come with o-ring style cylinder heads, those for 80“ engines come with band style heads. Compression ratio for both top ends is 8:1. Since the kits are not interchangeable it is important to correctly identify the stroke of the engine before ordering.

The pump body is CNC machined from billet aluminum which enhances the overall appearance of any engine. Compared to 1936-67 pumps the S&S product delivers 33% more oil. For maximum versatility they feature various fittings to either duplicate the original oil line routing or tailor one to suit custom requirements. Installations on engines from 1936–69 are strictly bolt-on if running solid lifters, also engines 1981-up require no modifications. Other crankcase year groups require a simple drilling or plugging step. For this purpose a special metal drill jig is required and available.

S&S High Volume High Pressure Oil Pump Evolution

The S&S High Volume High Pressure (HVHP) billet oil pump is a high capacity pump that was designed for the S&S Super Sidewinder Plus Engines. The SSW+ engines feature piston cooling jets that spray oil on the underside of the pistons. In order to supply enough oil for the cooling jets in addition to the oil requirements of the rest of the engine, a more efficient pump was needed. Although the HVHP oil pumps are very similar in appearance to the standard S&S billet pumps, there are several important differences. Special design features: A new tooth profile with fewer, but larger teeth, provides increased oil volume for both supply and return sides of the pump., Supply gears are 9% wider than stock or standard S&S oil pumps to give the HVHP pump even more oil capacity., Return gears are 28% wider than stock or standard S&S pumps to insure that the additional volume of oil supplied to the engine is scavenged and returned to the oil tank, preventing oil carry over from the crankcase breather., In spite of wider supply and return gears, the HVHP pump is no thicker than stock and uses the stock oil pump drive shaft. , The universal cover has a number of oil feed and return options allowing maximum flexibility for customized installations., Each pump includes supply and return gears, drive shaft, snap rings, miscellaneous hose fittings, gaskets and mounting hardware.,

S&S Crankcase Breather Valve for Twin Cam

Since production start, there have been Twin Cam A engines that have had oil carry over problems, more commonly known as ”oil out the breather“. This is caused by pressure changes in the crankcases as the pistons travel up and down which prevent the oil from the cylinder heads to drain down into the cam chest. Instead oil is trapped in the drain passage. When enough oil accumulates in the rocker boxes, it will start to blow out of the crankcase breather. The problem is generally more common at sustained high speeds, and is also more common in big inch engines. For years, it was something you sometimes just had to live with.
