While the hand brake cylinder on the handlebar forms one component together with the hand brake lever, the foot brake cylinder, i.e. the one for the rear brake, is a separate component and is connected to the pedal by linkages and joints. The main components are the housing and the piston, and the reservoir for the brake fluid may be integrated into the housing. Harley-Davidson has used separate and integrated reservoirs across model years and different model generations - FLH, FX, Sportster, Softail, FXR, Dyna.
