The Harley-Davidson factory archives possess a photograph from 1930 that puzzled viewers for decades: it shows a young man, clad in race leathers, astride a 750cc DAR road racing motorcycle. Unfortunately, no information was added to the picture, and eventually, no one in Milwaukee knew anymore exactly what and who the bike and rider were. The first American authors to come across the photograph made all sorts of speculations in their publications, but none of them proved reliable. It was only the author of this book, Fritz Simmerlein, who was able to solve the mystery. Since the 1980s he had been researching the history of Harley-Davidson, especially in Germany and Europe, including the very active pre World War II racing scene. A prominent figure herein was Paul Weyres, a multiple German champion from Aachen, who, from the beginning (1923) to the end of his fantastic career (1939), exclusively rode Milwaukee machines, from early IOE engines to the OHV Knuckleheads. So Mr. Simmerlein knew the man and had even seen press photos of the motorcycle, and one day this 1930 photograph lay before him…
This book is the result of decades of research into the history of Harley-Davidson factory racer Paul Weyres (1900-1984) and his racing machines. No German or American rider achieved more victories for the Motor Company than he did. He won the toughest long-distance races on solo machines and especially with sidecars, sometimes competing in two classes on the same day. Riding skill and seemingly indestructible physical stamina were his trademarks. Moreover, he was loyal. Despite resistance and hostility from the Nazi regime starting in 1933, he stuck to his Harleys until the outbreak of war, which ended all racing activities.
Over 270 pages offer a glimpse into this era. More than 200 previously unpublished photographs showcase the exceptional rider and his legendary racing machines, often in excellent quality for the time. Enthusiasts, restorers, and history buffs alike will find something to enjoy here. Limited edition. A must-have.
