Cotter Pins

Cotter pins

In most cases, cotter pins are used to secure nuts. Even though we love them, the vibrations of our Milwaukee bikes cause bolted connections to gradually loosen. Loose nuts can untwist themselves. Important nuts were therefore designed as castellated nuts until the 1970s. The split pin is inserted through the crown of the nut and a suitable hole in the bolt, bent over and the nut stop is complete. On shift and brake linkages of models up to the 80s (IOE, Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead, K-Model, Ironhead Sportster, Shovelhead), cotter pins secure the bolts even without a thread by simply inserting them through the appropriate hole and bending them over.

Cotter pins in the standard form are loops of semicircular wire, bent into a head approximately in the middle and both arms, which are not quite the same length, are aligned in parallel. Like spring washers, split pins are designed as disposable parts. Of course, they can be straightened after removal and used again. But who wants to go under the strict eyes of an AMCA judge with bent cotter pins on their bike!

They are available individually in various diameters and lengths, listed with the respective spare part numbers, galvanized, parkerized or in stainless steel. Or as complete assortments of galvanized cotter pins for the workshop.
