The round acorn and flattened cap nuts on the engine, gearbox and elsewhere on the bike were a stylistic device in the 70s to set the home-made Harley chopper apart from the machines that the neighbor was riding around on. If you wanted to go extreme, you used pointed spikes. And then, at least in good old Germany, spent hours arguing with the men from the TÜV about the permissibility of spikes and which spike radius was justifiable - usually in vain.
