Transmission for K-Model and Sportster 4-Speed

4-speed transmission for K models and Sportster

With the introduction of the block engine, the smaller models with a V engine were given a fourth gear. The gearwheels are in constant mesh, but because the housing is tight, one gearwheel can be moved on the main shaft and one on the auxiliary shaft. This means that this gear wheel is involved in three different ratios depending on its position! Also for reasons of space, the auxiliary shaft has been moved under the main shaft and the gearbox is much shorter than its predecessors. And last but not least, Harley-Davidson introduces the cassette design, both shafts are mounted on the clutch side in a common plate, which can be pulled out of the housing as a unit together with the shafts, gears and shift mechanism. The housing remains installed in the frame.

As with the W, WL etc. models, the clutch sits on the left on the gearwheel of the 4. The clutch sits on the left on the 4th gear sprocket, the sprocket for the rear wheel chain sits on the right side on the main shaft. The right-hand chain (or belt) remains one of the distinguishing features of the Sportster models until the end of the 2021 series.
