While other motorcycle brands were still using ball bearings packed with grease, Harley-Davidson Big Twins already had tapered roller bearings in the steering head: Big Twins from 1949 and Sportsters from 1978. On older models with cast steering heads, these tapered roller bearings are housed in separate, pressed-in bearing cups. On Sportsters from 1982 and Touring models from 1981. Softails had cast steering heads until 1988.
