Harley-Davidson adopted tapered roller bearings in the steering head of Big Twin models as early as 1949, and in Sportster models from 1978. At that time, other manufacturers were still using simple ball bearings packed with grease.
On older Harley-Davidson motorcycles with cast steering heads, the tapered roller bearings sit in separate, pressed-in bearing cups. From 1981, Touring models were equipped with tapered roller bearings as standard, and Sportster models followed in 1982. Softail models had cast steering heads until 1988.
