Fuel tanks for Softail models
In 1984, the then new Softails such as the FXWGs and FLHs had two-part petrol tanks. Due to the experience with cracked tank mounts, the new split tanks differed from their predecessors in two essential ways: the tabs were much larger and therefore connected to the actual tank on the now flat inside of the tank by much longer welds, and the two sections of the tank were each mounted in three rubber vibration dampers.
This type of mounting was standard on all Softails with Evolution engines. It was only with the TwinCam series that one-piece tanks were introduced, with a speedometer mounted on the tank in a panel. The left gas cap was replaced by a fuel level indicator in the same shape.
OEM replacement tanks or Custom?
For stock replacement on the Evo Softail, there is not much to choose except for the tank capacity. With custom tanks, you have to be careful that tabs and other parts on the frame do not get in the way and need to be modified. Tanks for the TwinCam Softail simply have to fit on the frame tube with the square cross-section. The higher the tank sits—e.g. the Cole Foster Bobber Style—the less it will cover this steel beam in the area between the seat and the rear cylinder.
Take off the gas tank
The two sides of the tank are connected below the frame with a hose. Before removing the tank, the tank must be pumped out to avoid major spills. An alternative to pumping out is, of course, a connecting line with quick-release coupling.
