Drag pipes have been part of the appearance of many Harley-Davidson custom bikes for decades. The straight-running, open exhaust systems are designed without mufflers and are often used for custom builds where a classic custom look is desired.Due to their open design, they are primarily intended for show bikes, individual custom projects, and use on non-public roads. They can also be used as open racing exhaust headers on the race track.

After decades during which exhaust headers on Harley-Davidson motorcycles were simply inserted into the cylinders (heads) or clamped in place, the engineers in Milwaukee came up with a screw connection for the Shovelhead cylinder heads of the big twins from 1966–1984. The required internal hex screw was simply threaded into a single tapped hole in the flange on the cylinder head....
