Exhaust pipes
No matter how you call it - what is meant is the pipe that leads away from the exhaust port on the cylinder head and ends at the silencer. On air-cooled Harley-Davidson motorcycles with one and two cylinders, they are available in various diameters. Starting with the 1-1/4" and 1-3/8" pipes of the IOE models, to the 1-1/2" pipes of the 750cc sidevalves and the 1-3/4" pipes of the 1200cc and 1300cc sidevalves and all OHV models. For all those not familiar with inches: these are rounded 32, 35, 38 and 44 mm. Even the big inch Milwaukee Eight has 1-3/4" diameter pipes. This dimension seems to have proven itself as a healthy compromise for good flow for everything over 900 cc.
What does an exhaust manifold do?
It directs the exhaust gases away from the cylinder head. But why not just let the gases whiz out into the open air? Even Milwaukee´s famous racing engines like the 1916 OHV 8-valve have more or less short pipes at the exhaust ports in all the pictures. This is due to the fact that the energy of the gases must be used to clear the combustion chamber as quickly as possible for the incoming fresh gas. Without pipes, the old gases would expand directly behind the outlet duct and lose their kinetic energy. The gases would build up, so to speak, and the engine would perform significantly worse.
Exhaust manifolds in the W&W Cycles range
In addition to the connection diameter on the cylinder, exhaust pipes also differ according to the shape and curvature on the respective motorcycle. That is why we have organized them by engine and model: IOE, Flathead (side-valve), Knuckle, Pan, Shovel, Softail, K-model, Sportster, Dyna, FXR or Touring. For the do-it-yourselfer, there are tubes that you can cut to length yourself. We also present a practical selection of clamps, flanges, screws, small parts and gaskets. The parts come from The Cyclery, The GasBox, Paughco, SuperTrapp, Biltwell and Genuine James Gaskets. So you click, you will find.
