After decades during which exhaust headers on Harley-Davidson motorcycles were simply inserted into the cylinders (heads) or clamped in place, the engineers in Milwaukee came up with a screw connection for the Shovelhead cylinder heads of the big twins from 1966–1984. The required internal hex screw was simply threaded into a single tapped hole in the flange on the cylinder head.
The disadvantages of this system should not be overlooked:
- the fastening is not symmetrical; sooner or later the flange will warp and the gasket will start leaking again
- the thread in the cylinder head is stressed every time the screw is tightened or loosened (a better alternative would be a stud)
- there are no torque specifications from Harley-Davidson for this screw. In many cases, this leads to the screw being overtightened, with corresponding damage to the thread
When dealing with this screw, it is therefore best to proceed with care, not to exceed 18 Nm, and to avoid retightening it when the engine is hot.
