On the wide forks of Harley-Davidson Big Twins (9-7/8” fork tube spacing), the upper fork tube caps also serve to support the tubes against the upper triple tree. For non-air-assisted forks, there are essentially only two common versions of fork caps: with 1-3/8”-18 thread up to 1977, and afterwards with an M35x1.5 thread. Fork tubes after 1977 were and are originally sourced from Japan. The pre-1977 version also features the thread and drillings for the fork vent oil separator. These earlier forks operate without an air chamber.
