An exhaust manifold, interference pipe or muffler must be tight at the connection and joint points, not only because of the noise development, which the exhaust is actually supposed to dampen, but also because of the performance. If the system leaks at these points, the mixture formation on the intake side can be influenced: The result is poorer performance.
