Electronic Ignition Systems

What is an electronic ignition system?

Simply put, the current through the ignition coil is not switched on and off by a mechanical switch, the breaker contact, but electronically with a special circuit. In the simplest case, the breaker cam is replaced by a rotor, and the breaker contact and capacitor are replaced by the circuit.

Why do I need electronic ignitions? I can change a contact myself at the roadside in case of need!

That's right. But the thing about the breaker contact is: it has to be changed, because it is subject to wear. An electronic system is not subject to wear.

Electronic ignition systems have been on Harley-Davidson motorcycles since the late 1970s. There are two reasons for this: Checking, adjusting and changing breaker contacts was no longer considered contemporary by customers. Japanese motorcycle manufacturers led the way by miniaturizing the electronic ignition system in the mid-1970s to the point where it could be installed in a motorcycle. The second reason was increased demands on emissions. The breaker contact, with its wear and the resulting tolerances in ignition timing, was unable to provide the required precision. This was the hour of electronic triggers.

Do all electronic ignition systems work the same?

No. There are significant differences, both in the rotors and sensors and in the circuitry itself. This results in different compatibility with ignition coils, spark plugs and ignition cables.
