These hydraulic tappets feature numerous significant design improvements and are perfect for stock replacement as well as high performance applications. A 3.12mm larger inner bearing race reduces stresses to increase axle, bearing, and roller life. A redesigned plunger assembly better withstands forces associated with heavy-duty valve springs and cams typically used in high-performance applications. Another feature is a revised metering device which precisely controls oil delivery to top end, insuring rapid lifter pump-up and reducing possibility of oil starvation to bottom end. What this all comes down to is that about the time your springs start to surge at high rpm and go into harmonic distortion the tappet rollers start lofting off the back side of your cam. High lift cams and strong valve springs substantially increase the loads on the tappet rollers, which can lead to failure of stock components. Then the broken needle rollers will likely destroy your oil pump and the deformed roller will damage your cam lobe. Ultimately, a complete engine tear down and oil system flush are required to remedy this. The Powerglide Steady Roll tappets have the needle rollers replaced with a special bronze alloy bushing and the improved roller attached to a proven “Powerglide” tappet. This combination results in significantly increased reliability, longer life and quiet operation. The failsafe design means even if the bushing wears out, it will be retained in the tappet assembly.

Tappets and their guides

Tappets transmit the movements of the cams. They convert the circular movement of the cams into a linear movement that is passed on to the valves.

In the air-cooled V-Twin engines from Harley-Davidson, roller tappets have performed this task since the side valve engines of 1929, with a few exceptions. The tappets are perpendicular to the axis of the camshaft and the movement is transmitted directly. The tappets are guided in separate components with precise bores, the tappet guides. These guides can be replaced separately in the event of wear. On models without hydraulic valve lash adjustment, the tappets have adjusting screws for the valve lash. On the tappets of the large Twins from 1952 onwards and the Sportster from 1986 onwards, the tappets house the hydraulic compensation units for the valve clearance.
