Camshafts, the heart of valve timing

The camshaft(s) essentially determine the character of a Harley-Davidson V-Twin engine. That's why, in addition to original replacements, we always stock a few tried-and-tested camshafts that give the engine considerably more liveliness or even make it race-ready. For the older models with ioe or sv engines from The Cyclery, Samwel or Andrews, for the ohv parts the names Cannonball, Leineweber, Andrews and S&S are responsible.

How do I choose my camshaft(s)?

The timing and valve lift are decisive. Roughly speaking, the opening duration results from the timing and the opening cross-section, i.e. the passage for the gases, results from the lift plus the valve disk diameter. Together, timing and lift are responsible for how much mixture enters the combustion chamber and how quickly the burnt gases can leave for fresh gases. However, exactly how timing and lift interact and which other parameters are also responsible for the performance of a camshaft is a real science and beyond our scope. That's why we provide a description of the characteristics of each camshaft based on the manufacturer's specifications.

Can I change a camshaft myself?

In principle, yes, with the necessary care and the appropriate amount of time. Some camshafts require additional work: Milling on the engine housing, turning off an adjacent gear, changing or adjusting the height of the valve springs. We therefore recommend that you follow our instructions in the store and go through the work process in the workshop manual before you start. It is also best to obtain the required gaskets etc. in advance.
