As early as 1898, five years before the first Harley-Davidson, carriage builder Henry Timken was granted the patent for tapered roller bearings. Under his name, these bearings are known throughout the English-speaking world; used in pairs, they can absorb both axial and radial forces. On Harley-Davidson Twins, these bearings were used for the rear swingarm from 1958 to 1986 and as wheel bearings from 1973 to 1999.
