Pull Starter
Pull Starter
When it came to dependability the older style solenoid and corresponding components were not really what you could always count on. Was it really that bad? Nope, but you had to invest a lot in maintenance to keep it reliably running. The Pull Starter cures this, and replaces the solenoid and the complete wiring to the handlebars. Besides, this billet aluminum product also looks way cool with its jockey lever. Simply installs en lieu of the solenoid to the inner primary. To be used with a special starter relay, which has to be purchased separately.

Magnetic switch and small parts

The magnetic switch is technically a relay, a really big one with large contact studs. The moving parts that close the two switch contacts are not in the solenoid switch itself, but external: the piston, the springs, cotter pins and pins and the rubber seals, which keep out dirt and moisture.

Solenoid switches are available individually for all E-Start Sportsters up to 1980 and Electra Glides, FXE, Softails and Tourers up to 1988. For later model years you can find them at this link.

Replacing the magnetic switch

If the solenoid switch fails on the road (even the most reliable part eventually reaches the end of its service life), you can get by with a trick: fumble the rubber cap from the thick connections and bridge them with a screwdriver or small wrench from your on-board tool kit. This should not be done too often, because the starter motor will already turn while the pinion is still engaging. This is not good, neither for the pinion nor the ring gear on the clutch. But it works ...

If you decide not to trust your magnetic switch anymore, you can achieve starter engagement mechanically via a small lever: the so-called pull starter. If you pull the lever, an electrical contact closes and releases the flow of current to the starter motor via a relay.
