On the first electrically started Harley — the 1964 Servi-Car — the entire current for the starter solenoid winding flowed directly through the handlebar button. On the Electra Glide and Sportster models with the more powerful starter, a relay was therefore installed between the starter button and the solenoid to protect the button contacts. The Delco Remy relay was the first version in a long line of starter relays used by Harley-Davidson.
