As part of the model update for the final two production years with the IOE engine, the standard handlebar was revised once more. Measuring just 29.5” in width and featuring a 15.5” pullback, it represents a middle ground between the very early handlebars and those used in 1926–1927.
Handlebars for Models with IOE engines and Early SV Models
Despite their differences in shape, pullback, wire and cable exits and so forth, all these handlebars have omne thing in common that sets them apart from later handlebar models. They have two pieces of tubing brazed to the center section which are inserted into the fork tubes and then clamped by the upper fork brace. From 1915-1939 (last W solo models with the early cushion forks) the center distance of these two pieces of tubing was 4-3/4” (short of 121 mm for our metric friends). The way the handlebars were fixed in the fork tube top ends did not allow for any adjustments. To change a rider's position, the complete handlebar had to be exchanged, plus — of course — grips spirals and cables and wires had to be dismantled. Quite a bit of a job. But on the other side, the rider who was keen on a change had due to Harley-Davidson's ample model range a wide selection of different widths, pull-backs, heights and so on to choose from.
