Harley-Davidson’s older electric start system used a separate starter motor and solenoid. That setup relied on a mechanical starter lever, which made it prone to issues and failures over time. Apparently, that was enough for Harley to take a cue from the automotive world. Starting in 1981 on Sportster models and from 1989 on Big Twins with the 1340cc engine, they switched to a new-style starter assembly with the solenoid built right in. No more adjustments—just a solid, reliable crank as long as you keep the battery well-charged.
