4 speed Big Twins from 1982 on were equipped with oil filter cartridges that were screwed to a base plate behind the transmission. Sportsters 1980-early 1984 used the same filter, but the base plate sat over the transmission or on the front motor mount. Sportsters with alternator had the oil filter mounted in front of the front cylinders, just like the later models. The pore size of these filters suit the gear oil pump of the Big Twins and the gerotor pumps of the Sportsters.

Oil Filter Cartridges 3/4”-16 Thread
All 5 and 6 speed Harley-Davidson Big Twins have these cartridges, as well as all Evolution Sportster models late 1984→ and Buells →2002. These filters have 6 or 10 µm pores. Dyna models with Evolution engine use 5.5” long cartridges as a standard. This provides some extra ounces of oil to these sporty bikes.

S&S Oil Filter Cartridges 3/4”-16 Thread
The oil filter cartridges from S&S Cycle
fit all Evolution Big Twin and Sportster engines and, of course, Buell models up to 2002. With a 30 µm pore size, they provide finer filtration than the original Harley-Davidson filters for Evo engines. Since these filters were originally designed for S&S engines, and S&S engines from 05/01/2000 onward were equipped with a hex-head drain plug, the sealing washer for this drain plug is included.
