On 4-speed Big Twin models from Harley-Davidson, the kicker clutch is mounted on the transmission mainshaft. Kicker clutch, gear, and spring are suitable either as OEM-style replacement parts or for converting electric-start-only bikes to kickstarter operation. For installation, you best consult the workshop manual.

Compared to earlier 16T kicker gears, the 1959-1966 14T gear reduces the overall kicker ratio by 15%. Depending on the engine sprocket, the crankshaft will spin 1/5 to 1/4 turns farther on one kicking stroke. Whether farther means faster, too, this depends on kicking stroke vigor. Nevertheless, on magneto equipped low compression twins a 1/4 turn more may be the difference of a spark at the spark plug electrodes and no spark at all. High compression twins will not benefit from the 14T gear.
