The switch from 6-volt to 12-volt electrics in 1965 also called for a new ignition coil. When double the battery voltage runs through an old 6-volt coil, it can get pretty warm. The breaker points don’t handle such high currents well either. That’s why, starting in 1965, Electra Glides with 1200 cc and Sportster models with 900 cc came with a simple black, sealed coil with 5 ohms of resistance to deliver the spark. Just like the original, our reproduction coil is compatible with breaker points as well as the first factory electronic ignitions through 1979. And Dyna  S ignitions also require 5-ohm coils if you’re riding your Harley-Davidson on the street rather than the track.
