Drive Ratio
What calibration values did original Harley speedos use?
- 1000 rpm = 60 mph: FL models 1962–1980, FX 1971–1972, and FXWG 1980–1983 (drive from transmission)
- Harley-Davidson specified 1000 rpm = 60 mph as 1:1. Expressed in kilometers, this corresponds to ≈600 rpm = 60 km/h, i.e. k = 0.6.
- 2000 rpm = 60 mph: 1936–61 Big Twins, 1952–72 K/XL (drive from transmission), 750cc 1937–61 (drive from rear wheel), FX/XL from 1973 (drive from front wheel)
- Harley-Davidson specified 2000 rpm = 60 mph as 2:1. Expressed in kilometers, this corresponds to ≈1200 rpm = 60 km/h, i.e. k = 1.2.
- 2240 rpm = 60 mph: FLH 1981–84, FLST and FXST 1984–95. When purchasing speedometers calibrated in metric units, these must be labelled 1400 rpm = 60 km/h or k=1.4.
Note: 60 mph = 96 km/h. To convert to mph to kph calibrations, divide rpm by 1.6 .
