On the batteries of Harley-Davidson motorcycles with 6 V systems, felt washers with a central hole were used from 1923 onward. These were placed over the battery terminals before the cables were attached. To prevent the washers from absorbing moisture, they were soaked in oil or grease. In principle, this provided excellent insulation, preventing the laterally protruding terminals from coming into contact with the metal battery case in which they were housed in the J, V, R, and W models. Of course, felt ages over time and becomes brittle despite the lubricant. Here is your replacement.
