On their 3-speed 750 cc and 4-speed Big Twin transmissions Harley-Davidson relied on loose needle bearing for decades. In this case loose means that the needle ran between without cages on ground steel races or on the shafts themselves. Worn needles could be exchanged, races and shafts could be re-ground, and new needles inserted for required bearing clearance.
